The poem "Minstrel Man" is just stating that even if your happy on the inside it dosen't mean that your happy on the outside . You can show the nice side of you but have a dark side. People don't realize that.
Exactly. I don't think he was suggesting a person's dark side, although it is certainly true and could easily be applied that way. Based on the historical context (1920's, Jim Crow laws), I think he was referring to the "happy Negro" image that white people were comfortable with. So he is saying, I might sing and dance, but on the inside I am dying.
